I'm the founder and Managing Director of Essential Content - a
content marketing and public relations agency in Manchester, UK
(Media City in Salford, actually).
We specialize in two things; content marketing and public
relations. We actively avoid the 'full service' and 'integrated
agency' tags that are so tempting to arbitrarily throw about.
Prior to starting Essential Content, I was a freelance content
marketing and PR consultant, helping regulated businesses
(financial services, fintech, and health) overcome the unique
challenge of using content-driven campaigns to sell products and
build brand advocacy while under the watchful gaze of their
industry regulator.
I've also consulted some very exciting SMEs in non-regulated
industries, such as fashion, logistics, business intelligence,
artificial intelligence, and surveillance.
I started out as a copywriter in around 2005, after cutting my
teeth editing a lifestyle magazine for dog owners. It was and
remains the best magazine dog magazine in the world. We interviewed
lots of interesting people about their pets, including Mariah
Carey, Vidal Sassoon, and Pete Wentz. This was my first proper job
in the media industry. It's been decidedly less glamorous since
then.
Along the way, I learned a lot about strategy and have spent my
career since then combining my love of words with the nuts and
bolts of strategic implementation to help brands come alive
online.
